As an actor starting out the only thing you have to offer in an audition is YOU! Do we see YOU every time you audition? If not it maybe why you're not booking. I see actors over-think so much in an audition that they start giving us a character rather than who they are. Yes there is an arc in every scene including the co-star roles with one line, but it's not rocket science...it's Romper Room. Next Audition Technique Class starts July 7th for 4 weeks. Last chance to join at the discounted rate $140 per month. Each class you will receive a co-star and guest-star to prep for class. The auditon muscle needs the work-out. Kurt Koehler works in casting and you can view his credits on IMDB.com
Actors are needy and searching for approval. That's why we act. It's no wonder with all the rejection we face. It's a better goal to book the room and be considered for more in the future. It's called branding yourself. Needing to book a role that you have no control over including what the writers have imagined for that role. This one more thing you can't control. Be you unless that ask you to be someone else. THE ACTOR PREPS new classes start July 7th Tuesday at 7:30 in Burbank
Don't miss Chico's Angels! One Week only and already selling out!
Someone is trying to kill Charo, so the Angels are hired to go under the covers on THE LOVE BOAT. Intrigue! Suspense! and Cha-Cha Heels! Chico's Angels: Love Boat Chicas was co-created and co-written by Kurt Koehler and Oscar Quintero and is directed by Kurt Koehler. Tickets on sale at http://chicosangels.tix.com AUDITION TIP OF THE DAY - When preparing for an audition, learn to let go of booking the job. Look at it as a "one night only" performance. What's missing from a lot of auditions is the prep work so they loose confidence. You are confident when you are rehearsed, so curtain up, bow, and leave the theater. If you get called in to perform it as an encore/callback, then great. If you book the big shiny produced show kudos. Your goal is to book the office. More auditions will come your way. But let it Gooooo Let it Gooo! #auditiontechnique #workingactor #castingworkshops #frozen #hollywood People know me from CHICO'S ANGELS or Julie Brown's HOMECOMING QUEEN so I've been dealing in camp for a while. One reviewer saw my WOMEN BEHIND BARS and called me a "Camp Specialist". So I've decided to to be a specialist and help others learn the style. I've had many actors over the years audition for my productions thinking it's just bad acting they need to delivery and it will be funny. Not so. It's some of the most committed moment to moment work with heightened stakes. Depending on the piece the faster and louder it goes the better. By believing in something that's already hard to believe, you can make anything funny. For instance if i were playing the most beautiful woman in the world, an audience would visually see that is not true, but if I believed it and committed to that character's wants and desires then it would be funny and the audience will follow me into the story. If i winked at the audience and laughed at myself, it may get a laugh, but then it can't sustain a character journey or a two act play. That would lack stakes and a character arc. A great example of commitment to study is Grayson Hall in Dark Shadows. She wasn't trying to be funny, she was trying to jam pack all these emotions into a half hour TV show. Yes Melodrama and Camp are similar in style, but that's for another blog. Let's enjoy watching an actress commit to the work. Hey gang! As you may know I started working in Casting again this year and I've picked up a lot great insight on what gets the callback and other details that loose the audition all together. I've been coaching auditions privately on and off for years, but I wanted to teach a class that actually stretches that audition muscle every week. We are taught how to act in college and scene classes, but if you can't audition you can't work. Each class you will be given sides in advance for a guest star and a co-star to prepare. We will go over prepping techniques and audition execution. This is only a class
THE ACTOR PREPS class is every Tuesday at 7:30 in Burbank starting Feb 10th. Sign up for the group of 4 or 8 for only $100 a month. 10545 Burbank Blvd #202 North Hollywood CA 91601 This is not a cold reading class. We are only doing one night in Los Angeles at Casita Del Campo (Sat. Jan 17th) and one night is San Francisco's Sketch Fest (Sat Jan 24th). The show is in it's 3rd incarnation since 2013 and it's unstoppable.
It tells the tale of an 80's Valley Girl and her struggle to fit in. Julie's best friend Debbie Dickey is nominated for Homecoming Queen and Julie will stop at nothing to support Debbie's reign as "the girl most likely to" in school. Things go totally nuts when an evil Homecoming Queen ghost returns from 30 years ago seeking vengeance and possesses the most popular girl in the school. Ever wonder what it is you need to do for an audition since you had no direction from the director yet? Or do you ask yourself, "Why didn't they teach me the audition process in college?".
In Kurt's four week class (Tuesdays 7:30-10 January 6th-27th) you will be drilled through co-star and guest-star auditions each week. Practice makes better. Some improv and acting technique will be thrown in for good measure. Limit 12 per class also helps the students get more attention. In our 11th year and still selling out every show. Not to be missed, Chico's Angels delivers the laughs!
